How Many Reps Should You Do for Strength?

2-6 reps with heavy loads is a practical strength default. Learn when to use higher reps, how many sets to do, and how to progress without guessing.

For a strength-focused program, use 2-6 reps per set on your main lifts for 2-3 working sets, with a load you can control. Use 6-12 reps on many accessory lifts, and stop most sets with about 1-3 reps in reserve instead of chasing failure.

That is a starting range, not a law. The best rep target depends on whether you want a bigger one-rep max, more muscle to support strength, or a repeatable plan you can recover from week after week.

What is rep range?

A rep range is the planned number of repetitions for each working set, such as 3-5 or 8-12. For strength training, the range should be heavy enough to practice force production but wide enough that you can complete quality work without turning every set into a max attempt.

What rep range is best for strength?

If your goal is to improve a one-rep max on a specific lift, keep some work in the 2-6 rep range. Heavier loads are more specific to maximal strength, and the 2026 American College of Sports Medicine guidance recommends heavier loading at about 80% or more of one-rep max for strength-focused training. That does not mean every set should be a single or that every workout needs to feel maximal.

For many lifters, sets of 4-6 are the practical center. They are heavy enough to build skill and force production, but usually give you more quality repetitions than repeated singles, doubles, or triples. New lifters can also make excellent progress with 5-8 reps while they learn consistent range of motion and technique.

How many reps should you do for each exercise?

Choose the rep range by the exercise and the job it has in the workout. Main lifts benefit from heavier, more specific practice; secondary compounds can use a slightly wider range; and smaller accessories do not need to be forced into low-rep work to support strength.

  • Main strength lift: 2-6 reps, usually for 2-4 working sets.
  • Secondary compound: 4-8 reps, balancing load, technique, and useful volume.
  • Accessory or isolation lift: 6-12 or 8-15 reps, using controlled reps that do not disrupt the main lifts.

These ranges overlap on purpose. A 6-rep set can build strength and muscle; an 8-rep set can improve strength when the load is challenging and the exercise is performed well. The useful distinction is not a hard boundary between “strength reps” and “hypertrophy reps,” but how specifically the set practices the performance you care about.

How many sets should you do for strength?

Start with 2-3 working sets per exercise. That is enough to create repeated practice while leaving room for the rest of the workout and the next training day. Add sets only when you are recovering well and the extra work improves your weekly performance rather than making the last sets or next session worse.

Can higher reps build strength?

Yes. Meta-analyses find that a wide range of loads can build muscle, while heavier loads tend to produce larger gains in measured one-rep-max strength. That difference is partly specificity: if you practice lifting heavy, you get better at expressing strength against heavy loads. Higher-rep work still builds the muscle, technique, and work capacity that support future strength.

Higher reps are especially useful when the equipment jump is too large, when a joint does not like heavy loading, or when an accessory is safer and more efficient with moderate weight. If your 25-pound dumbbells are easy but the 30s destroy your form, build reps first instead of pretending the rack gives you a perfectly sized progression step.

The rep range is not the progression system

A target of 3-5 reps does not tell you what to do after 5, 5, 4. It only sets the lane. The useful decision comes from your completed reps, form, and effort: add the smallest load when you own the top of the range, repeat the load when you are close, and reduce or adjust when technique breaks down.

How close to failure should strength sets be?

Leave about 1-3 clean reps in reserve on most working sets. That is close enough to make the set productive, but far enough from failure to preserve technique and performance for the next set. Heavy squats, deadlifts, and presses usually deserve more caution than stable machine or isolation exercises.

Failure is not a requirement for strength or muscle growth. Research comparing failure and non-failure training has not found a consistent need to reach the point where another good rep is impossible. How do you progress with a rep range?

Use double progression: build reps inside a range, then add load and repeat. Record the weight, reps, and a short effort or form note so the next target is based on the last comparable workout rather than memory.

  1. Choose a range, such as 3-5 reps for a main lift or 8-12 for an accessory.
  2. Keep the load steady until every working set reaches the top of the range cleanly.
  3. Add the smallest practical weight increase at the next comparable session.
  4. Expect reps to fall toward the bottom of the range, then build them back up.
  5. Hold or reduce the load if reps, form, pain, or recovery say the jump was too soon.
